Please can anyone tell me how to trim
cockatiel nails safely?

Last time I took one to the vet..
cost me more than a manicure for myself.. :scared:
He also made my Zippis toes bleed..
Good advise needed

Jan, I just have one of my kids hold her securely upside down in a towel, in VERY GOOD lighting, and use my own nail clippers. It's easier to see the quick if the nails are white.

I have to trim kermits nails regularly,
i hold him on his back and i just trim a very small amount of the end of the nail to start with,as PatE says it is easier if the nail are white.
ermits nails are dark so i just cut a little of at time. if you do accidently make the nail bleed put abit of cornflour on and it stops the bleeding.

I don't do my birds nails I take them to the Bird Paradise bird store to have them done. They are very reasonable and it gives me a chance to buy them a nice toy while I'm there.

I've never done mine either. But...Snickers is being groomed this Sunday. I have a groomer come to the house. He doesn't travel well..lol..long story..but anyway...I've had him over 20 years now, from a baby. I have the dna test papers and I'm finally going to find out if my boy is really a boy!

I try to have a 'Sandy Perch' http://www.windycityparrot.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=20041721001&Category_Code=parrotopia&Product_Count=4

in my birds' cages so their nails file down a little bit naturally. This doesn't always work though.

I have someone hold them in a towel and use regular finger nail clippers and clip off only the very tip. I've even used a nail file to smooth the rough edges afterward.

Gail, don't forget to start a thread when you get Snickers DNA'd!! I can't wait!!

I use the sand perches and the cement perches too. I put them by there food and water dishes so they have to use them every day at least for a little while.

Practice carefully and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it pretty fast. Everyone catches a vein once in awhile, especially on tiny parrotlet toes! Just make sure to take it slow and you'll do fine.

To be honest I have kept Parrotlets for around five years now and have never needed to cut their nails, remember that they will be long and pointed and sharp to hold onto the perches, I have cut the budgies once and that was mainly because sky has some very funny toes that don't grab the perch.

Don't think Pesto & Boo Boo's nails have ever been trimmed, the sand perches seem to do a good job.
