You need to have either sand perches or cement perches in his cage to help wear the nails down a bit. You can go to any pet store and ask for them.

Put different kinds of perches in his cage and you will not have to clip them, I have never clipped my Parrotlets nails. They do look long but they need these to hang on to things with :) its different with the greys and bigger parrots are their nails are very big and don't get to wear them done in a pet situation

I'd strongly suggest replacing the standard plastic perches too, for exactly the reasons given. The ones we bought vary in diameter along their length to give their claws more exercise as well as being 'sandy' to keep the nails trim. Each cage has a 'twig' perch too that they love to roost on.

Apples good not sure about cherry, one of the best is willow, mine only ever get willow mainly because there are a dozen trees at work :) With new growth you can just wash it but with bigger older branches its best to strip the bark off
