New cage too soon?; New parrotlet, new cage, new toys....

So James has been here about 24 hours. Still nervous but eating and such. I've located a larger cage for him, he came in a budgie cage. The guy I got him from says the cage is fine but I am looking at all of the cages you guys have posted (some are birdie mansions!) and I want at least a cockatiel size cage for him so that's what I've found. My question:

Is it too soon and too much change for him all at once to move him to a new cage today?

He's about 2yrs old, he hasn't been here long, I am obviously going to add more perches and toys over the next little bit but is it too much change = stress for him in a new surrounding so soon?

Hi and welcome to the forum, if he was mine I would set up the new cage and move all the toys and perches from the old cage and then move him, then add more toys as and when you can. Parrotlets do adjust quite easy to different things, well mine have any way.

Have you any pictures :)

That's what I was hoping you'd say, the white budgie cage doesn't fit the office decor at all! lol

He really doesn't have much of anything the poor guy. There is one plastic perch which the woman at the store told me is not good for their feet, two hanging heavy duty plastic, colorful toys - one of which he perches up behind to sleep and two plastic dishes one for food and one for water... newsprint on the floor.

I bought a new wooden perch, looks like a branch and put it in there yesterday when I came home. I want to get a few more that look like that, wooden and like a real branch. I also want to switch his dishes to stainless steel even though it doesn't appear he chews the dishes. All my other pets have stainless steel :) When changing the dishes for food and water I was going to leave the old ones in there too until he got used to the new ones or does it matter? I was thinking out his seeds in the stainless steel one, pellets in another and fruits and veggies in he plastic?

Also, can I ask about food stuff here or do I have to go to a food related topic?

Thanks for the input!

No photos yet. I didn't want him to think the paparazzi were after him when he just moved in.

Oh and the new cage measures : 26h by 19D by19w

Should be good right?

The only thing I have to check is bar spacing.

The cage you describe sounds perfect but make sure the bars are no wider than 1/2" for a Parrotlet.

The bar space is 5/8" which I read was max, suggested bar spacing is 1/2"-5/8" from everything that I read, is that correct?

Hello Crystal wave and Congratulations! Your new little guy nod2 is just adorable! You're already a step ahead with him being tame....things can only improve from here. Did you try a backward head scratch? My little George blue1 just LOVES  that!

My cage is also 5/8 spacing, which I was a little worried about at first, but so far it is working out just fine.

I would really try to stick with the 1/2 inch bar spacing and accident waiting to happen if you go larger.

My first cage i got for sky past1 and scooby nod2 the bar spacing was 5/8, all was well for a while and then scooby realised one day he could squeeze out through, everyday i came home from work scooby nod2 had got out of his cage , and then sky past1 soon got the hang of it.
so i agree with the others just think about the bar spacings

Wow, this is really good to know.

Sometimes from reading TOO many different books and articles, you get conflicting information and some do say "no bigger than 5/8". Luckily I'm home all day and can keep a close eye on him.

I think that I will start looking for another cage for George and put my cockatiel, Coco in this one. It's such a nice cage and actually bigger than the one she is in now.

That's a good idea Pat. That would be a good cage for a Cockatiel. Better safe than sorry! nodding

Bummer... I guess I need to find a new cage then. At least I found this one online for cheap so I can probably sell it for what I paid and get a new one! A friend of a friend has birds so maybe I will check with them and see if they have anything suitable.

I'd just read so many articles that say up to 5/8" but better to go with people who have direct experience. Thanks for the info.

Ok so I'm on the hunt for a new cage, larger then the budgie one James arrived in but hopefully not more then $100 - wish me luck... the "cheaper" parrot cages with the 1/2" spacing seem to start around $150 or so...they are small... I was looking at other types of caging and I came across a "kitty play pen". It's extra large like a cage big enough for the larger parrots (maccaws, african greys...) and the spacing is small because it's geared to keep small cats, the doors operate the same way a bird cage does but it offers a heck of a lot more space. I'm thinking you could house 3 parrotlets in it comfortably, they'd think they were in a triplex condo rofl

This is what I am talking about kitty playpen = new parrotlet mansion?

What do you guys think? Too big? too square? just right? what the heck am I thinking? (laugh)

I've emailed around to double check bar spacing but other then that I can't see why it wouldn't work just as well?
