Zupreem for feisty LB?

Hello to everyone! I have enjoyed reading around the site, and have found a lot of good info here.

A couple months ago I purchased a young male Pacific Parrotlet, named LP, who is the sweetest little guy. He loves to fluff up his feathers in your hand and puts his head down to be scratched...he's a clown around and about his cage too lol

My family got me another one for Christmas, but they got a female, in case we would want them to lay some eggs. We live in a duplex here, and one bird is in one house and the other is in the front house, so they are never in contact with each other.

Anyways, this female I named LB, because sometimes she can be a LITTLE B if you know I mean! lol She is fffffeisty, and comes and will bite my fingers pretty hard, or any soft spot she can get to. She is about 9 weeks old now, and insists on eating only the bird seed, or spray millet, but not the Zupreem Fruit pellets that I put in. This leads to my question...

I am not sure if many overseas use Zupreem pellets, but they are pretty expensive here in Los Angeles at chain stores like Petco or Petsmart. So when I found a 12 # bag for $40 I grabbed it, but these are the Medium sized pellets for my cockatiels. I have read online that someone gave their parrotlet the Zupreem cockatiel sized pellets...but Zupreem does offer the same formula in a variety of sizes, and recommends the next size smaller for parrotlets, So a few pushes of the food processor should chop up the medium pretty good right? I also have some canary/finch sized pellets that were not eaten either.

Will parrotlets eat the Medium sized Zupreem Fruit blend pellets?

Will my feisty young female eventually warm up to us if we continue to hold her and try to scratch her lil head?

Thanks for the reply!

My cockatiels love eating those Zupreem Fruitblend pellets, which was why I grabbed the large bag of Medium pellets and put them in a storage container.

Here is the link to the pellets

I purchased these pellets before i got the parrotlets, and now I was hoping they would conveniently eat the same pellets as my cockatiels.

You mentioned that your parrotlets enjoy large parrot seeds...generally can a parrotlet eat what a cockatiel eats (or size specifically)?

I noticed the parrotlet seed is full of safflower seeds, which is pretty much all she eats anyways. Can I expect her to start eating the pellets, if I slowly put more and more and less and less of the seeds?

I want to make sure they have the best diet, as I have heard the bird seed is rather fatty. I gave her some broccoli today which she nibbled, i just don't want her to be picky when she gets older!

Hi and welcome, I feed mine a cockatiel mix and have never felt the need for pellets, you could try them on brocolli, apple carrots peppers etc. All I do is clip pieces of fruit or veg inside the cage.

I used to feed mine the Cockatiel zupreem natural pellet and they ate it well.. I switched them over to Harrisons after awhile and they seemed to like that even more. I never fed them the fruit colored ones. Just be careful with allowing them to eat too many sunflower seeds they are what they will pick out of the seed mixture first. I buy a good quality seed mixture that has no sunflower seeds at all.

Hello Daniel. wave Congratulations on your new little feathered friends.

Kevin has posted a very good link under Food and Nutrition-"Feeding Pellets to Parrotlets", that you might find interesting.

I also switched to the Harrison's crumbles and offer it in a small dish only as a supplement. Every now and then I see him eat a little, but I don't push it.

Along with a good seed mix, I really think that it's more important to offer lots of fruits, vegetables, whole wheat bread, pasta, beans, sprouts, etc.......... nodding I was even surprised when mine tore up a cabbage leaf on New Years Day. He also loves to crunch up celery. Just keep trying different things.

Cricket won't eat pellets but loves Nutriberries. He gets really excited when he gets one. lol!

Just as important as seed or pellets is to give them a variety of fresh fruits and veges. And also always provide them with a cuttlebone.

As for the nippiness, that is normal for a newly weaned Parrotlet. That should subside soon! :)

Yes what Gail said is so true the more fresh fruits and veggies you can get into them the better off they will be. Also as a treat try toasting a piece of whole wheat toast they love it.

Congrats on your new babies!!

I don't have much to add -- you've already got a lot of good advice. I don't feed my little guy pellets, but he LOVES Avicakes (made by Lafeber, the same company that makes Nutriberries). Avicakes are little squares of seed and pellets mixed together. Spike will actually run to me if I have one in my hand.

He eats a seed mix with mainly safflower seeds and just a few sunflower seeds. He also gets veggies, pasta and bean soak mix. It seems all birds love corn too!

Snickers and Pebbles love the Avicakes and will have nothing to do with the Nutriberries. Cricket LOVES the Nutriberries and Buster says no to both!
