wave I am trying to resurrect myself from the dead now that the baby is being a little more independent (although a lot more destructive!), and get back to some of my non-baby interests. But now I have a question for anyone who has had parrotlets & kids at the same time:  What age are kids safe with birds? I know it's going to be a while yet, but when do they understand to be gentle and not squish the birdie? 3 years, or 5, 14, 40? When she was brand new it was no problem, I could carry her around & Jade would sit on top of her head and neither one knew the other was even there. But now they definitely know and Kate is very curious & grabby so lots of supervision when Jade comes out. I feel bad she doesn't get as much attention as she used to (she was the baby before!) but she actually seems to be adapting pretty well. So far no one has been grabbed or squashed or bitten (well, except me), and I'm trying to keep it that way as much as possible. |

to be honest Squeak doesn't get as much attention as he used to, he always gives me a goodnight kiss as he being put back in his cage though. He spaends most of his time sat in the cage with the budgies now they don't seem to mind now as he just sits on a perch and preens or sleeps. They adapt pretty well to having less time with you, as when kids should be allowed to handle birds I have no idea never had any kids :) |

I had birds when my children were small. At about 5 years old they were able to handle the smaller birds (with supervision) when they could really understand what soft and gentle meant. My daughter was actually great with a conure at that age. I now have a grand daughter that is 2 years old. The birds go back into their cage when she is here. She wants to hug them and they want to bite her! WAY TOO YOUNG! It would be best to let Jade out at baby's nap time. |

You can never be sure how safe it is to have a Parrotlet with a small child. They don't understand just how tightly they are grabbing them. Parrotlets are so tiny I wouldn't allow a child under the age of 7 handle them. |

Okay, so 5 or later is about what I thought it would probably be. Right now she likes to watch the birdie sit on Mama's head, and that's about all I allow. Jade's actually afraid of her (smart nod2 !) even though nothing ever happened between them, so she flies back to her cage if they get too close together. Kate grabs and flaps at the porch-cat though, who is amazingly tolerant of it, and I don't want anyone to get hurt. Even if she didn't hurt Jade, I'm pretty sure she'll get nailed if she ever gets within beak-range. |
