Well, I had to separate Boo Boo & Pesto. I came home the other day & he'd bitten her toes badly! They'd been fighting a lot lately, as you know they've never really been "bonded" but they lived in the same cage ok for the most part so I put it down to hormones at this time of year. Anyway, her toe was black & swollen so I had to yank her & put her in another cage at least while she healed. I had some anti-biotics from her last illness & laura cleaned her foot & gave her the first dose. She seems ok now, her toe is healing ok & she is eating, etc.

The point I'm making is, how unpredictable these little guys are! Also, Pesto & her both still try to get to the other cage yet they didn't get on that well when they were together  drats

We clipped both their wings & it's amazing the change in their behavior. When they were flighted they were just so independent & self-assured, she used to nip me a lot & was just generally "unruly". Now she's back to her old self where she just loves me to death & wants to be with me all the time

I think if you have just one parrotlet, it's fine to leave them flighted, they'll bond with you & be a wonderful little companion. But my observation is if you have 2 or more, they are a whole different (better) bird/pet if they're clipped nodding Just mt thoughts after 4 years of p'let ownership. 2.gif

I had the same problem with Sky and Scooby he bit her toes and her leg i had to seperate them for a while.
I agree that wing clipping is best, i never used to but i clipped my parrotlets wings because they were always flying into things and i thought they might hurt themselves and they are alot better.

I know many people don't believe in wing clipping but it does help.

Kev, when I saw Boo's bitten up toes, I thought of Bubble! Pesto had bitten two of her toes, one just a nip, but the other was pretty bad and looked like it almost went all the way through. I don't think antibiotics are always needed for a little nip, but her toe looked to be infected already and she wouldn't put any weight on it and her entire foot was purple/red.
I'm so relieved her foot is looking better!!

nod2 Had to separate my 2 girls..
After Mints wing was wrongly done...
They hate each other now... and Im sure
given the chance Sky would kill Mint...
My problem is....
When buying from the breeders why dont they tell
you one is best and not 2 together..I really thought
I was doing the right thng.. company for each other
how wrong I was...

Awww poor Boo. That must have hurt like hell :( When I first got Cricket I thought about getting a cage mate for him. When I hear stuff like this it makes me think twice. They really are unpredictable. I'm glad Boo is healing!

Thanks all.

I think once one of them shows any sign of weakness it's like an attack signal for the other. I guess it's natures way of making sure only the strong survive. :(

She is thankfully getting better every day but I fear they may have to stay separated. Whenever I bring them out she doesn't want anything to do with him. They don't fight but she just keeps moving away whenever he gets close & then she tries to fly back to her cage. He wants to be with her & it's kind of sad because she just wants to be with me. She's always been bonded to me but it's much more noticeable since he bit her. He's such a nice little guy when he's out on his own, a really sweet little boy. It's just when she's around that he starts to "act up".

We'll have to see how it goes.
