ello everyone!

i got a hand reared parrotlet yeasterday evening (soooo cute!) he is tame but very nibbly which is painful and i know he is just exploring but it is very painful! lol
Second thing this is that he keeps trying to squeeze his way out of the cage, my mum had to let him out so he wouldn't hurt himself. i thin he just wants to be with us but he has to go to sleep in there! lol he was getting quite cosy on my neck earlier He also jumps onto my face and chews it, especially at a mole near my eyebrow

any advice?! please! i did have a budgie for 7 year so i'm not a complete novice but i need advice!

Hi Hayley congratulations on your little bird...
Maybe the gap in his cage bars is too wide.
It should be 1/4 too 1/2 inch width...
Also I wouldnt let him chew your face a bad
habit to start...When he does it, gentle push him
away and say NO firmly...
Im sure once you both get use to each other
you'll have lots of fun...
Good luck let us know how it all goes

he only ever tries to get out of the bottom bars so we are gonna put something round them. if that don't work then we will have to down size his age :(
i'll keep trying the no thing too

thanks

Congrats on the new parrotlet! When my one was showing too much interest in a gap in his cage i just stuffed it with cardboard for him to nibble - checking it and replacing it regularly.
He'll be investigating his cage thoroughly at the moment - might be worth making sure there are other things to distract him.
You could always post a picture of the cage (and your parrotlet!) and some other bright spark here may come up with an idea for you.

Congratulations on your new baby.
When i first got scooby he used to try and squeeze through the bars and eventually he managed it he was a right little escape artist, i eventually had to get him a cage where the bars were alot smaller so there was no chance of him squeezing out.

Congratulations!!!

The nibbling will subside! Probably just testing the waters! lol! Be careful with the cage bars. I've heard horror stories about them getting stuck...so keep an eye out :)

Congratulations on your new baby Parrotlet. Everyone has given you good advice about the biting and bar spacing. You don't want to have any gaps larger than 1/2" for a Parrotlet.

were looking into cages and if we can't find one then we are gonna put some mesh around it, till then we are watching him and making sure the door is open with someone there.
he is getting better and more relaxed every day :) will post photos soon

The bar spacing looks ok in the picture, as Laura said it should be no more than 1/2".

My guys always pick at hairs, moles, etc, birds preen each other a lot so it seems he's trying to preen you & thinks any blemish needs removing!    drats

One thing, maybe don't leave millet in his cage all the time, they will eat that & not much else if it's there & there's very little nutrition in it. It's like candy to them. Also, if you only give him millet as a treat when he's a good boy, then it will help train him quicker. Parrotlets can be a bit nippy, but most times they're either just using their beak to get around (& gripping a bit hard) or just being a bit playful (they play rough!). Anyway, the stern "No" thing is good & also put him back in his cage for a while immediately after he nips you, he'll soon learn that if he nips he loses playtime (or his millet treat) nodding

It will take him a little while to settle down but you seem to be making good progress. As you said, the escape thing is probably because he wants to be with you, he'll soon learn that the cage is "his" place & will settle down.

Just remember, if you have a bird you will get a nip now & again :scared: That's just how they are, but it shouldn't be very hard or painful. I've had my guys 4 years & once in a while I'll still get a love bite!! eek eek    hide

& Scoob, I think that's his little head in the first shot, not a finger

lol, yeah, thats gizmos head as he chewed the camera lens lol
he has gotten soo much better, especially in the last few days, much less nippy today an he hasn't tried to escape since last weekend :)
i was told by the breeder to leave millet in for the first week so to let him settle easier, he has pumpkin and hemp seed as good boy treats

Glad to hear he's settling in! Since Gizmo is just a baby, millet is okay now like the breeder told you. Just when they're older they can get fat if they eat it constantly. :)
