Hello Everyone, I am brand new to this site and to being a parrotlet owner. I went to the breeder last night to pick out my baby boy. When I got there, the breeder showed me the two brothers cuddled together. She said the smaller one was not for sale because he had a slightly curved foot. After spending some time with me, the breeder asked if I would be willing to take the little one at no extra charge. She said they have bonded so much that she felt horrible about separating them. The little guy flew onto my arm while I had his brother on my finger and I fell in love with both. They do snuggle together on the perch, but I have had both out to socialize with me as well. I have read that two birds kept together will not bond with the owner. If I keep interacting with both daily will they still form a relationship with me and make great pets? So far so good, but it's only been one day. blue2 Thank you in advance for any advice blue1 |

Hi Rebecca, welcome to the forum 2.gif They will probably still "bond" with you, but not the same as if there was just one bird. You become more part of the flock as opposed to being bonded with them. I have two & they get along with me fine nodding They have no problem sitting on me or me having them step up, etc. Good to hear that you're doing as well with them as you are at this early stage, also good that you didn't have to separate them! |

Awe that is so sweet, it is nice that you have taken the little guy with the curved foot but it should not bother him to much. cannot wait to see pics |

Welcome His foot wont worry him much.. My little girl Parrotlet broke her hip and knee.. she gets around well with a lot of the perches adapted.. she holds her one leg by her ear all the time... They seem to get use to their problems just like we do.. Well done for taking both.. |

blue2 Thank you for all your support. Any advice or tips on how I can bond with these two as best as one can with two birds? blue1 |

I will be honest it is more difficult with two rather than one, but it is possible. when i first got my parrotlets i got scooby then i got sky, i used to take them one by one into a different room, a lot of people use the bathroom as long as you put the toilet seat down, somewhere away from distractions so they can focus on you. wing clipping is a option but it is a very contraversal subject some people agree some people don't, i did'nt a first but my parrotlets were very flighlty and were banging into things so i clipped there wings and i could not believe how much easier they were to handle , it is up to you i find them easier to train and handle and for they own safety aswell. Temp them to step up with a treat usually millet , parrotlets are scared of hands so i use a stick to start with and eventually they will be stepping onto your finger you are nearly there. good luck but it does take a bit of time and patience but it will be well worth it :) |

Thanks Scooby! I will try the separate room approach. By the sounds of things I think I'm on the right track. Last night I took the bigger bird (Ben) out and it only took three attempts to get him out of the cage on my finger. Jerry ( the little one) then flew out of the cage onto my arm and spent an hour or so playing with my ponytail while Ben sat on my finger and nearly fell asleep while I was giving him kisses. This morning I took Ben out...again three tries..... and he sampled a nibble of my toast while Jerry was eating millet in the cage. I realize I will never be the center of their universe as I would be with one bird.....but as long as they accept me and may even look forward to coming out and playing with me.... I'll be happy nodding |

sounds like you are doing great, even though sky and scooby are a bonded pair they accept me as part of the group scooby will still run under on to my neck and hide under my hair ,he used to loved doing that when he was a baby and sky just loves her cuddles. it sounds like you are getting there but it just takes patience and expect a few bites along the way. |

Hi Rebecca, Getting the two parrotlets out separately is great advice. It seems they're already accepting you as part of their flock already which is great at such an early stage. Keep up the good work. If they ever start getting so bonded they don't want to spend time with you, just take them out individually again. :) |
