I don't know what to say, even as I'm typing this Nando is trying to bite my fingers.

Now ive read that I should not show him it hurts me, but it's soo painful! How can I not? I'm swollen, dented and he's even drawn blood! I try to take it but he just bites the same spot over and over it's impossible to bare :(

Any advice,

Thanks guys and gals

First I would remove him from whatever he is doing when he's biting you. Don't just sit there and take it, he will probably think it's just great and all is OK when he bites you.

I would keep him occupied with toys and things to chew on. When he bites you, say no firmly and then give him a toy. Praise him if he plays with the toy instead of biting you. If he continues to bite, I would put him back in his cage for a while.

You will get lots more advice and tips, I'm sure! You have to be consistent and he will get through this bitey phase.

They like to bite things that move quickly, such as your fingers when you're typing eek eek drats drats

Laura gave good advice, they're kind of like puppies or kids, you have to show them what's acceptable & what's not. Their eyes are much netter than ours at seeing little things that they think they should pluck off their mate (he probably thinks a little blemish is a tick or something drats & he's getting rid of it for you). As laura said, they do go through a "bitey" phase, so he may have to have a "time out" now & again nodding 2.gif 2.gif 2.gif

Thank you, tonight was better, he just enjoys being in his cage. I will take him out but from the moment I do it's like he's on a mission to get back to his cage.

I bring him on my bed with some treats, do step ups etc but he just loves to bite! I'm sure he knows it hurts me. I normally shake my hand beneath him or say no or even blow at him.... I feel he maybe bites to try and tell me he wants back to his cage, I really would like him to enjoy time with me, it's too bad I didn't get a loving bird but ohwell. Patience is the key right.

I have to admit I don't fully understand birds and how to be around them, I've always had cats which are obviously very different. Hopefully in the next few weeks things will turn around.

Don't give up Sara, although parrotlets aren't really "loving birds" like conures or others, they can still bond with their owner & be pretty affectionate nodding They're just very feisty giggle

If you can, I would take him somewhere he can't see his cage when you take him out, a bathroom works well (remember to put the toilet seat down!! eek ), practice step up's, etc & reward him with millet or something when he does it. Although people have varying opinions about it, trimming his wings while he's young & being trained does remove a lot of their "attitude" nodding 2.gif

You can let them grow out when he's older, but until he bonds with you I would trim his wings, it's amazing the difference it makes when they have to rely on you to get around rofl rofl rofl

Wow Andy you sure love your emoticons!! rasberry

Nandos wings are clipped, the breeder clipped them slightly but I had to take them in a bit more as he could still fly everywhere and fast. How long do they normally take to regrow?

He is nearly 15 weeks old now, so am I correct in saying he will molt soon? Could this explain the aggressiveness and biting? He loves his millet so I'm using this for training, only leaving a piece in once or twice a week (he looks a little too skinny) drats

Nando is very spoilt (I need to post a pic of his cage) so shall I try training him super nanny style and take some of his toys away?

When i first got scooby he was a feisty little horror ,he used to bite all the time, i nearly lost the will with him, but now he is great he snuggles under the back of my hair and loves his tickle, in my opinion parrotlets seem to mellow the older they get or maybe fatherhood has calmed him down, eventually Nando will bond with you and he will be your best friend i am sure. as for wing clipping i clip my small birds wings for safety reasons and it takes about 3-4 months for the wings to grow back properly.

Nando is getting a little better each day, he will step up when I put my hand in his cage, he rarely tries to run now but still reaches and bites when I approach.

He's so sweet, he recognises where I keep his millet and will jump to his door once he sees me reaching for it. Only problem he runs back in if I try to get him to step-up....... So working on this at the moment.

He's losing the feathers around his eyes, it looks quite scaly, is this the start of a molt?

One last thing, yesterday I saw him chewing on his leg band, did not see any blood or sign he chewed himself. If he continues should I just have it removed?

Cheers

Hi Sara
i am a bit concerned about you mentioning the scaly bit around his eye,he could be starting to moult ,but there is a tiny mite that causes a condition called scaly face ,but this is normally found on budgies and canaries, it is very easily treated with a lotion you can get from a pet shop. i would get a second opinion because i might be wrong, is he losing features anywhere else?
could you get a picture?

Oh No!

I don't think it's mites to be honest, but I will get a picture up. Yes there as been a lot of fluff coming off him in the last 2 weeks and he does have some pin feathers on his head.

Using the word "scaly" is an overstatement' more like dry skin where there are less feathers, like their feet....... Lol no he doesn't have scaly feet too!

I spray him with Johnson plume and mite spray once a week so I'm 99% sure it's a molt as he is at the right age to start.

But I'll let you guys have a look, will try and get a pic up asap!

Thanks xx

I think Nando is doing great! Stepping up from the cage is really a lot of progress!!

Sometimes they just pick at their leg band, so as long as he isn't really bothered by it, I would just leave it alone.

Some vets feel comfortable taking them off, while others don't want to hassle with it, or fear they might hurt their leg. You can talk to your vet and see what he/she thinks.

Oh, I'm quite upset with nando, hes not the nice gentle bird I wanted, he doesn't want human interaction, he bites as soon as he gets the chance!! I think I was dealt a bad card with him.. I've never given up on a pet before, but the thought of swapping him and having a gentle bird is becoming very appealing. I've had him two months only, I wont make any rash decisions, I just don't see any progress and I doubt he will all of a sudden like me overnight!!

Sorry if I'm moaning! I just know some of you have has similar experiences, its not like I can have an in depth conversation with someone about birds who doesn't own one rasberry
