Yay! I'm glad to hear that. He must be responding to the heat/light. Does anyone keep a small hospital cage on hand for your birds? A few years ago Andy made a hospital 'cage' out of a small acrylic aquarium. It was fitted with a low perch and a thermometer and a mesh/screen top. You can put a few flat dishes inside for water and food. Then put the heat lamp on top but off to one side in case it gets too hot for the bird. This treatment really does wonders when they're sick because they can't keep their body temperature up when they are ill. They can fight off illness much easier this way. |

I have a little hospital cage made from a old plastic fish tank with a mesh covering, i also have a red heat lamp to keep it warm, luckily i have not had to use it up to now. Jan I got a low waltage red heat lamp which i intended to use to keep parrotlet chicks warm ,it is designed for amphibians, it keeps the them warm and with it been low wattage it does not get to hot. |

Jan they look just like light bulbs but are white and they give out heat, you would not need a very high powered one for parrots. if people have a fish tank as a hospital cage make sure that there is air flow through the cage if you are using a heat lamp or you will kill the bird by cooking it alive ! |

Blimey, what do you people have over there for heat lamps, military grade lasers!!!         I used a 40w heat lamp with a thermometer attachment that was set to around 80f I think. As Laura said, you have a mesh screen on top which allows for good airflow & put the heat lamp to one side so the bird can move away from the heat if they want. These are special animal heat lamps like you use for lizards, etc, but you really need a thermometer switch on the lamp as if it's on all the time it can get a tad warm in the hospital tank, some people use the under tank heat pad (again, like the ones used for reptiles) but the problem with this is the whole bottom of the tank gets warm & the bird can't move away if it wants too. I've had several sick birds (budgies, parrotlets, etc) get better using this little tank, now we have the "Brinsea Brooder", but it was really expensive. The little tank works fine if it's set up right. Some people even use them as brooders, in fact Pesto was kept in one when he was a wee nipper (no pun intended) & was being hand fed. |
