Does anyone have a definitive cage size guide to cage sizes suitable for parrotlets? Every article I read suggests a different size. I have our pair in an 18"wx 15"d x 41"h cage with 1/2" bar spacing. They do not seem happy, spending most of thier time huddled together on the highest perch and only venturing down for food and water. A recent article suggests that Parrotlets rarely fligh verticle, but need horizontal space, and need a cage at least 36" long. I then read on the forum, and am told, that people are keeping them happy and active in smaller cages than I have. I'm pretty sure mine are not hand reared as they are too skittish, and I know they have spent at least 2 month in the bird centre I bought them from, but I'd have expected a little more movement from them by now. They have toys etc, but take no notice of them. I can only think the cage is the problem. I hate seeing them seemingly so dejected and unhappy. |

There isn't a definite cage size for parrotlets. It's true that they can't utilize the space in a high cage as well as in a wide one. Everyone will probably give you a slightly different answer, but for my parrotlets I like a cage that is wider than the one you're using. At least 24" wide or more, and something a little deeper would be nice too. It wouldn't have to be 36" wide though. The one thing everyone will agree on is the 1/2" bar spacing, any larger than that they can get their heads stuck in the bars. Once your pair becomes more comfortable around you, they will probably be more active. :) |

Good advise from Laura... Mine are in cages longer than high.. They sound like they are still getting use to you and tieir surroundings. Have you tried to tempt them with millet to see if they come out of the cage. My 3 arent into playing with toys very much. These birds you have may not know what they are... patience and luv will win them round Good luck let us know how it all goes. Oh big welcome to the forum |

Thanks very much for the advice and the warm welcome. we are looking around for a new cage for them at the moment as the view seems to be that thier cage is too narrow. The problem is that we've spent so much over the last month or so on buying and housing the celestials, and the Linoleated parrakeets, that money is a bit tight. On the plus side they are eating very well....love the millet and egg food. And one of them has really taken to a carrot. So much so that he's beak is turning orange giggle I guess we are maybe asking a bit too much from them in just a couple of weeks. It's just that the linnies have settled in so quickly and are just SO active in the same size cage, even though they are slightly bigger birds. Oh well....back to Ebay I guess. I'll get some pics up of them once I get a chance to take some in daylight......I think the flash would totally freak them out at the moment.......although saying that, they've quickly got used to having a loud vacuum cleaning rooting arounfd the bottom of thier cage ( outside) |

So glad they are settling in with you. Id hold off for a while on a new cage. As long as the bar spacing is 1/2 inch they will be ok. They will get use to their cage and settle well. Later on in the year maybe get a cage when you feel the time is right.Good sign they like Carrots.. mine dont. |

All good advice from the girlies!! (as usual!!!) I was going to say my Pancake (spectacled parrotlet) is in a taller cage but almost square. Maybe about 3-4 inches taller. I want to get him ( and Gordon) a nice new cage. Maybe let them settle before you move them again. It's crazy how different each parrotlet can be!! Good luck with everything!!! |

when i first got sky and scooby i put them in a massive parrot cage and they were absolutely lost they never moved, the pet shop where i got them from had 6 parrotlets in a budgie size cage they looked very squashed so sky and scooby were not used to a lot of room, i find some parrotlets feel alot safer in a smaller cage. |

Well, we've taken the plunge. Having spent many a happy hour watching the celestials and Lineolated on Utube, and reading the items on here, we've been and ordered a new larger cage for the birds. The Linnies are going into the bigger cage, a Montana san remo, and Woody and Willow (the celstials) are going into a cage twice the size of the one they are in now. Due to the construction of thier existing cage, and the fact that the Linnies and woody and willow, are both in the same type of cage, I am able to remove the side from both the cages and join them together, giving them twice the flying length. I'm sure Woody and willow will be much happier. Woody particulaly as Willow can be a bit of harriden to him. argue The Linnies use literally every bit of space they have and being that little bit bigger will appreciate the extra space. nodding |

Hi. I belive they are American yellows. As soon as I get the opertunity to get some daylight picturesI will post them up. Also, by that time, we'll have thought of some names for the Linnies....I think Bert and Ernie, but everyone says I can't name them after the muppets and also one of them's female. Rosie and Jim, seems to be the favourite so far. |
