Hi Folks, hope you all had a merry christmas. not the same without any snow. 14 degrees in Aberdeen unheard of. Milly my 7 month old bird has well and truley discovered her wings and is flying every where, i am really getting worried that she will injur herself soon. I have had her wings clipped recently but exactly how much flying should a parrotlet be doing. she can fly vertically from the floor to the table which is about 3 feet high no problem. and even the whole length of the room 21 feet. Help urgently required. Thanks MARK.. |

all parrotlets and parrots too are all different, some prefer to fly crazy! or just climb. parrotlets are like kamakazee bullets!!! a slight clip to just slow them down will do the trick. alot of people slightly do it ( make sure both sides are done!!!) my Pancake doesnt need a wing clip hes such a silly flyer!!! he doesnt fly around much, he pefers climbing and winging off things!!! |

If Milly is flying too fast and you think she might hurt herself, trim her wings a little, at least until she learns to navigate your house. A lot of parrotlets fly like bullets, like Hayley already mentioned. Spike is clipped, but Boo and Pesto are flighted because they don't fly much. :) |

So basically we have just got to pay attention when she takes off. owe jings. Milly is a very good flyer just as well . i hate it when she flies you do not know where she will end up, last week she almost crash landed behind the sofa. Question 2 , apart from spraying milly to give her a shower is there any thing else we have to do to make sure she is clean. Thanks MARK. |

Not a lot really.. you could take her into the shower while your having one.... maybe play with her an a small bowl of water... Some members birds will go under a slow running tap... I handle mine in a soft glove and gentle stroke then all over... Much more I dont know what you can do! PS. Scooby-doo has started flying into things.... Ive cut his wings a little more...he slammed into the kitchen door I thought he must have injured himself but luckily he hadnt. Edited by Jan, Jan 3 2012, 09:16 AM.

Hi Jan, HOW ARE YOU. Glad to hear Scooby-doo is ok, it is an awefull worry when they do these things, Milly is learning fast. She flies onto the table and cheeps, thats her telling us she wants her breakfast. We do spray her with a bottle and soak her she hates it at first then she loves it. i was just worried incase we needed some special cleaning stuff. Thanks MARK.. |

You don't need any special cleaning stuff for birds. You might try taking Milly to the kitchen or bathroom sink and see if she wants to take a dip. Boo, the female of our green pair, loves getting totally drenched under the running tap. Also if her water bowl is big enough, she might decide to have a little bath there too. There will usually be lots of splashing but they barely get their beak wet! They aren't big bathers like some other parrots. I also have two Conures who love to take full baths where they are completely soaked!! :) |

Hi Laura, thanks for that. Milly tries to clean herself using the water feeder, what a state she gets in, we put down a bowl of water and she ran away, how strange is that. Milly hates a dirty beak, after every feed she comes over and wipes her beak on your clothes. we made the mistake once of giving her jam which she loves. she then put her head in the seed bowl. all the seed stuck to her beak. what a mess. Its like having another baby !!!!!!!!!! MARK... |

I take Bud in the shower. It's the only way he enjoys a bathe ( other than if the sun is on his cage he will splash a little in his water but he doesn't get very wet, he gets it everywhere else but little over himself!! ) I let the spray go over my one hand and place him in the off spray so it's not too vigourous. He squints his eyes and looks up towards the spray. He seems to like it as he doesn't try to fly off. Good place to tame them too!! I don't broadcast that information generally as some may think it sounds a bit strange but as you all have birds .................... giggle |
