In the excitement of bringing home a new baby parrotlet, some things are often forgotten. so i thought i would make a list of the things you should have ready before your new bird comes home. Cage, fully set up with toys. Food, if the breeder has been feeding the parrotlet a certain type of food, they will normally give you a small amount, for you to carry on feeding the bird with. Be sure to ask your breeder before you take the parrotlet home, what they feed their birds, then you can get a supply in. Hand feeding formula, just in case the baby regresses, be sure to ask the breeder how this is feed to the baby bird. Fruit and veg to put in the cage. My breeder uses a water sanitizer so i also bought some of this. |

Hi I have just bought 2 blue Parrotlets they are 2 cocks and i have been told they are about 1 year old.I have had them just under a week i feel they are now settling as when i change water seed etc they no longer fly in their cage and bite me i have had their wing trimmed and i have let them out in my living room and they seem to go to one corner and just stay there till i try to pick them up and put back in cage.I have toys in cage which at the moment they are not touching i have also started putting in various veg ie carrott cauliflower but they do not seem to be eating that but they are eating seed i just feel that they sit together on their huddled togetr very frightened am i doing things right or can any one give advise. the cage came with the birds and is about L18inches x W12inches x H18inches approx i am getting a new cage over the weekend which i feel will be a lot more Home L 60.9 x W 38.1 x H 87.6 cm Can any one advise i am doing the right thing and how long would it take to make them tame so they do not bite and look so frightened. Hi Mick a few things you should watch out for: firstly, make sure they get along, cocks are notoriously territorial of their cages and may fight with each other, sometimes when brought up together as siblings they get on BUT may turn to each other overnight, just keep an eye Secondly; they are one year old, you should try to tame them BUT very unlikely they will become sweet tame and cuddly; I hand tame babies from 3 to 7-8 weeks old, past that time if they are not handled it will become more and more difficult as time goes by. Keep trying by all means you may be lucky with those two Thirdly: grate a carrot, sprinkle some seeds on top, they should be pecking at it. Cooked pulses are good; soaked seeds; they need fruit, chop it up finely, kiwis, apples, peppers; papaya etc; also chopped nuts (just a tiny amount) like almonds; Give them time to adjust, keep a piece of millet spray in your hand, that should prompt them to move closer to you and eat from your hands; anything just ask here all the best past1 Stefano |

Thanks Stefano I have just put the cover over them we have had a great night they perched on top of the cage for 1 hour and when it was time to go in one went straight in and the other flew off but he was back in after a couple of minutes. They seem to be very friendly towards each other so i do think they are a Happy pair but i will keep an eye thanks for your advice ive got a feeling i will be back. Many Thanks ............. |

I would say lots of patience is the key. :) :) As they are already together and may have been always, it's unlikely you will get them very tame as Stef says. If you could achieve a 'step up' without them freaking that will help a great deal in giving them their freedom and being a little involved in their flock. You say wing trimmed. I don't know if you meant just one wing, but I would think they would be safer and more likely to tame if both wings are clipped. If they are clipped and land on the floor that's the most successful time to get a bird to step up as they feel vulnerable on the floor so are more likely to choose your finger in preference! nod2 nod2 |

Hi, I hope your new pair settles in well. You've had good advice here. :) I agree about the wing clipping. Always make sure both wings are trimmed or they will get off balance and could crash land and hurt themselves. This has happened to birds on this forum. |

Welcome to the forum... Im pleased your birds have settled in with you. Please make sure your birds wings are BOTH clipped... Im someone who had a badly injured bird from only one wing being clipped.. Edited by Jan, May 13 2012, 03:14 PM.
