Emergency!

I need some advice!

My parrotlet flew to the side of our Quakers cage and before we could get her off they bit her toe. I think that it's either broke or dislocated but it's bleeding some. What should I do? It's 8:30pm now so I can't call a vet until the morning. She's picking at it and i know it must hurt.

If anyone is online please let me know what I should do!

Thanks
Jessica

Hi Jessie, I don't know exactly what to do, but first I would think you want to make sure the bleeding has stopped. If not use some corn starch if you have any. Secondly, I would think you'd want to clean her toe to prevent infection. You can also set up a hospital cage and make sure to keep her warm, and cover the cage if she seems stressed. Maybe someone else will come online soon, but I think these things would be good to do in the meantime.

Jessica, is there a 24hr animal emergency near you> if so take him/her there. If not, follow Laura's advice & maybe tape up the toe so he/she can't pick at it.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for replying!

I don't think it's as bad as I thought. I was just so panicked!

She only picked at it a few minutes. We cleaned it up and stopped the bleeding. My husband also put some antiseptic (not sure how to spell it) to numb it and help clean it. She seems to be using it normal. Right now she's suggled up to her birdy buddy thing that she sleeps in and is falling asleep. We don't have a 24-hr vet anywhere near us (we've checked before). I'm going to call our vet 1st thing in the morning and see what she recomends.

I feel like such a bad birdy mom angrey2

I'm glad she's doing better and is cuddled up to her birdy buddy :) . You're not a bad birdie mom!!! these things happen so fast. I guess the best thing for all of us is to be prepared with a first aid kit for our birds (I don't have one myself - yet!).
Let us know how she's doing and what the vet says. I found this one a website somewhere -

"Bleeding or Bitten Toe Nails
A nail can be clipped too severely or be broken or a larger bird may chew on the toenails of a smaller bird, causing the nail to bleed. The first thing one should do is to try and stop the bleeding with gentle, but firm, pressure. Do NOT keep blotting the foot - as this may keep a clot from forming. If you are unable to stop the bleeding, apply pressure and seek medical help. Bitten toes or legs become very swollen. Antibiotics, analgesics and bandages are often necessary to prevent infection and to keep the bird from picking at its foot because it is painful".

check how she is in the morning jesse and if shes not putting any weight on it or if the foot looks discoloured then it might be a trip to the vets. if it looks ok remember to keep an eye on it for a couple of days.
these thingshappen dont feel bad about it feet are always the first things to be nipped

kev :)

Thankfully it's not needed now, but I read on your Parrot Place that giving them some cayenne pepper in their water lowers blood pressure and helps with shock etc. etc.
It's in one of the articles on there - apparently it's a real panacea.
And I know it's horrible when something like this happens, so easy to panic (you're running around while they're just sitting on the top of their cage wondering what you're doing). I've had that happen to me once or twice (with very minor injuries, as it happened). They're very stoic, so it just makes it all the harder to know how bad it is.

This morning she seems to be fine. She's using her foot normally and fluttered around her cage. She sleeps on a rope perch and stays on it most of the time so I'm sure that's more comfortable than a wooden perch. My husband is going to watch her today to make sure that she can stand on her food/water bowls and that it doesn't swell.

I talked to the vet and she said that generally when birds bite birds they don't get infected. But if another animal bites a bird it does. That has been her experience. She said to just watch for discoloration, swelling, and her not using it and if it got worse then bring her in and they could put her on antibiotics. She also said that we could put ky jelly on it to keep it lubricated.

I didn't have time to post last night about her returning to us but you may remember that she went to live with my mom because of our household stress. Well my mom has very bad asthema and I guess Daisy was making it so bad that she couldn't breathe at night. We went yesterday morning and picked her up. That's another reason I feel so bad. She has actually calmed down so much and isn't even afraid of being covered anymore and the first day she's home she gets bitten. :( I just hope she can forgive us.

Jessie I forgot that your Mom had her. I’m sorry it didn’t work out. Will you keep her?

Yes I will be keeping her unless I feel that she is getting too stressed out. I'm HOPING that my in-laws (all 5 of them) will be in their house within the month. I hope that she doesn't get too stressed out because I can't even imagine giving her to a stranger. I trusted my mom to take care of her and not just stick her in a corner. So right now I'm not even considering it. I just hope this injury is not a set back.

If she’s perching ok and putting her weight on her injured foot, then I wouldn’t worry too much. Like you said, keep an eye on it.

You have 5 inlaws living there…poor thing! lol!!!! May be you could put her in your bedroom until things quiet down there?

Yes 5 inlaws!!! I wish I could put her in my room but my husband sleeps during the day and he keeps it like 62 degrees in there because the sun shines directly on our wall for most of the day (it gets 90 degrees in there without the window unit).
